Nick Carraway is a 29 year old from Minnesota who graduated at Yale ,he spends the summer of 1922 living in a bunglalow beside Jay Gatsby. He acts as the narrator of the story,and is a charming and likeable person.
“I am inclined to reserve all judgments, a habbit that has opened up many curious natures to me and made me the victim of not a few veteran bores” –
This quote is telling us how Nick is a non judgemental person he keeps his opions to himself.By him keeping his opions to himself he has been able to come in contact with alot of curious people that tell very boring stories. A veteran is someone who has had alot of experience in life.This is saying Nick has had alot of experience around people who tell boring stories. By him keeping to himself he comes across as a very polite person and dosent fall into and issues with anybody.
“When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart.
This quote is saying that Nick he wants the world to be stick to the morals they have agreed to live by like soilders in a way. All lined up and doing the right thing.This is also saying Nick is sick of being dragged into poeple drama and knowing things about their life that he has to keep a secret from the world.He has had a bad experinece and just wants nothing more to do with it.

This one is saying that nick moves him around the room and forcing him to move he talks about it like the checker to the square.He is very easily lead by others they can direct him to do whatever they want because he is non judgemental dosent share his opions so they dont see him as a strong person.He dosent stand up for himself he is a pushover as you could say.
I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.” – Chapter Two
He is saying that he isnt one of them but he is part of their life.He is there but he dosent belong with them.He’s observing but also telling the story so hes in and without. He is intrested in it but he also dosent like it and dosent approve.He takes everything on board he is more of an outsider because he dosent live his life like them.
Most of the time I worked…I knew the other clerks and young bond salesmen by their first names…I even had a short affair with a girl who lived in Jersey City and worked in the accounting department, but her brother began throwing mean looks in my direction…” – Chapter Three
This is saying he is quite coureer driven cares about t more than relationships, he needs to make money unlike daisy and tom. He cares about what people think because when the brother gives him mean looks he stops the affair.he dosent like drama with anyone.
“I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.”– Chapter Three
This is saying he thinks quite alot of himself he is infering everyone else is a lier. Its a big call to make and he believes he is a very good person.Although he isnt the most honest person not telling the partners about their affairs with other people.
They’re a rotten crowd…You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together!’ I’ve always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him because I disapproved of him from beginning to end.”- Chapter Eight
he is saying that he tells Gatsby he is worth the whole bunch but gatsby isnt much better than daisy and tom, all he cared about was impressing someone he dint have very strong morals and did illegal things.Gatsby seems a little bit more genuine than daisy and tom.He does end up making strong opions about the charcters in the book even though he says he is a non judgemental person.He is very contradicting.
“I shook hands with him. It seemed silly not to for I felt suddenly as though I was talking to a child.”- Chapter Nine
he is saying that he has to shake hands with him because tom dosent get what he has done wrong. He ends up shaking hands with him and taking the easy road out instead of making drama.
“I sat there brooding on the old unknown world…” –Chapter Nine
This is saying he is quite deep in thought he is thinking about the world used to be like and what is it now. He is a thoughtful guy a very deep thinker.
He goes in believing he has very high morals but he ends up becoming a very judgmental person from the experinces he encounters.
