The creation of Jay Gatsby

Gatsby knows how to gain popularity with his wealth in order to make his household name well known.Every inch of him from his dress and speech, to the extravagant partys and the manicure of his lawn is purposely designed to convey the image he wishes to project.

The costume: Gatsby wears a lot of luxurious clothing. His intentions with the luxurious clothing is quite clear. He uses lavish fashion as a way of disgusing himself.Everyone uses clothing to conceal themselves but Gatsby uses the clothing to hide his true identity.in the quote from Daisy “they’re such beautiful shirts” she covered herself in them and sobbed. this is meaningful because Daisy herself is very wealthy so she will have very luxurious clothing. This plays a massive part in thr role of disgsuing Gatsbys background because if you do not dress in luxurious clothig you will not be respected by the upper class or thought of as rich.

The props : Simple props were creativley used to display Gatsbys wealth. An example of this was shown on the drive into New York with Tom in Jays fancy yellow car.The author placed a photo of Gatsby with his class from Oxford. As everyone knows Oxford is a very fancy and upper class school that the wealthy attend. This is showing that Gatsby must of had wealth in his past to be able to afford to attend such a top school. This is how the use of props is displayed.

The setting of the stage : Gatsby house was one of the most important settings in the story. the house was extravgent from the decor, archetichure to having maids everything was set out for what you would imagine a very wealthys persons house would be. the quote “this fella’s irregular Belasco” was in the novel as it creates a very significant idea.In this quote Gatsby is getting compared to David Belasco. David is known for his lavish sets so he is getting compared to him because Gatsbys house is similar to what Balasco would have come up with or created. This has meaning because it is saying Having a fancy and picture perfect home helps Gatsbys back story on becoming wealthy.

The speech and dialogue : you can judge someone and get a pretty clear picture on someones background just by the way they will speak to you. It is shown many times throughout the movie and book that gatsby uses speech and dialogue to hide details about his past. Before Gatsby was wealthy he wrote a list on what he needs to do and practise. One of them was ‘elocution and poise’ these things are drilled into children from wealthy families so they portray a respectable appearance to others.Gatsby had to learn to include this into his life to get recongnized and fit in with the upper class. This in the dialogue helps to develop Gatsbys back story.

The backstory : Gatsby seemed ashamed of his backstory and up bringing that he hid it from everyone in his life and created a new life for himself that he had always dreamed of. he was so focused on his new life that everything he did projected his wealth.from his clothing to props even the way he spoke was all designed to conceal his past life and hide the truth. This is how Fitzgerald covered up his up bringing and created a whole new life for him.

Hey Lyla,

Thank you for making a start with this work.

To make sure your answers are as strong as they can be try to:

– Use and explain quotations that support your observations.

– Connect your ideas to the concept of constructing an identity. Reflect on how all of these elements seem a little forced and why that might be, given that we know Gatsby has created an entire life and persona for himself out of nothing.

Let me know if you want to talk through this feedback!
